The new nine holes at Carne golf club is built on amazing links land. Ally McIntosh and James Coughlan (with the help of Nick Norton) were fortunate to have such an opportunity to create something very special; their efforts made the front cover of Golf Course Architecture magazine.
The budget for this project took minimalism to a new level. It was a credit to the driving parties at the club that the project was completed at all. It shows what can be done with great links land, imagination and determination.
Trump International was built was built on similar land in Scotland at the same time with a budget of £6m (for eighteen holes), and with all the attendant controversy and environmental concern, whereas the new nine at Bellmullet had the blessing of the community.
